Ima, Ai Ni Yukimasu : Be With You







When two souls find one another, nothing can tear them apart. Widower Takumi (Shidou Nakamura) lives a quiet life with his six-year-old son Yuji (Akashi Takei) after the loss of wife and mother Mio (Yuko Takeuchi). Yuji unfailingly remembers her promise to him: "I'll be with you again in a year's time, when the rains come." On the first anniversary of her passing, Takumi and Yuji are taking a walk in the woods when they come across a woman sheltering from a monsoon downpour. She bears an uncanny resemblance to Mio, but has no recollection of who she is or what she is doing there. Family life resumes from where they left off, while Takumi and Mio's memories of their first encounter in high school come flooding back. However, their new life together is interrupted by the discovery of Mio's old diary, which reveals the secrets of her past and how they must say goodbye once more in six weeks time...


"'Good morning.' `Good night.' `This tastes good.' `Are you alright?' `Did you sleep well?' `Come here.' Love lives within these words. To me, that's what being a couple is all about. But back then, I hadn't realized it yet." The above passage is an excerpt from Takuji Ichikawa's best-selling novel "Ima, Ai ni Yukimasu," from which the film "Be with You" takes its inspiration. Sweetly melancholy and ultimately uplifting, this tender love story has been brought to the silver screen by the assured touch and insightful sensibility of noted television director Nobuhiro Doi in his feature film debut. Talented young stars Yuko Takeuchi ("Yomigaeri: Resurrection") and Shidou Nakamura ("Ping Pong") vividly portray two lovers reunited by a mysterious quirk of fate who tentatively rediscover each other and the miraculous circumstances that have brought them together. Infused into the film's simple structure, which glides fluently between memories and the present, is a poignant expression of the manifold nature of love. The gentle resonance of "Be with You" will no doubt strike an inspirational chord in the hearts of viewers everywhere.

Review

A few years ago, Korean romances took over the market for the romance genre which had been held uncontested by Japan. While at least half a dozen made it big in the Pacific region, the most successful worldwide has to be My Sassy Girl (2001). The onslaught however soon ran out of steam, even for works by MSG's director Kwak Jae-young. His still widely acclaimed Classic (2003) had in fact faded somewhat, and not even bringing back Jun Ji-hyun from MSG could save Windstruck (2004). In the meantime, Japanese romances are making a come back. "Poetic" director Shunji Iwai brought a breath of fresh air with Hana and Alice (2004). It is Ima, ai ni yukimasu, however, that is the best romance coming out of Japan and Korea in the last ten years.

Unlike most traditional romances, Be With You offers up an intriguing, possibly supernatural premise - a deceased love returning from beyond the grave. It may sound like a pitch for a horror movie, but Nobuhiro Doi's masterfully told romance is anything but scary. A box office hit in Japan and elsewhere, Be With You is a rousing crowd pleaser, although not without its fair share of problems.


The film revolves around a widower named Takumi (Shido Nakamura) who lives in the country with his six-year-old son Yuji (Akashi Takei). The movie starts with a quaint little house nestled in the most idyllically beautiful, lush green countryside, where a shopkeeper of a cake shop delivers a birthday cake to a young man Yuji, who is making breakfast. We are then taken back to the time when Yuji is six, a year after he has lost his mother Mio through illness and is living a life of mutual support and love with his father Taku.

Both are mourning the loss of Mio (Yuko Takeuchi), beloved wife and mother. In the wake of her death, Takumi and Yuji have forged an odd, yet somehow functional relationship; they act almost as if they were abandoned children forced to take care of each other rather than actual father and son. And as if Mio's death wasn't enough, it seems Takumi suffers from a medical condition that affects his motor skills. As a result, Takumi must avoid crowds and live like a veritable recluse. Yuji is disappointed that Takumi can't do the things that most fathers can, but turns out to be amazingly understanding about his father's condition. Besides, Yuji has bigger things to prepare for - like his mother's possible return.

Strange as it may sound, Mio made a promise on her deathbed that she would return to Yuji and Takumi when the rainy season comes. Of course, Takumi is skeptical of his wife's promise, but refuses to put a damper on his son's excitement. It's clear that Takumi, too, hopes that her dying words come true.

When the rain starts, Taku and Yuji find in the woods a woman looking exactly like Mio, who has apparently lost her memory completely. The father and son naturally have no problem believing that it is Mio coming back from heaven, and bring her home. Although in a way she is still a stranger, she seems to accept that she is Mio, and asks Taku to tell her the story of how they first met and fell in love. Through that process, they fall in love a second time (assuming at this point that she is indeed Mio). As we share the joy of the family reunited as well as the love story of young Taku and Mio through the flash back, the six-week rainy season is mercilessly coming closer and closer to the end

Tentatively, their family life resumes, as Mio begins to adjust to her role as wife and mother, re-energizing the family dynamic in a way that brings happiness to all parties involved. In the meantime, Takumi tries to fill in the blanks for Mio about how they fell in love. Their back story is told from his perspective, as the film flashes back to their high school days. However, his version of events makes it clear that Takumi never became aware of Mio's true feelings at the time, a fact that will come into play later in the narrative.

But underlying all this happiness is the question of how long this reunion will last. It seems that while she was alive, Mio buried a time capsule, one that holds the key to her startling reappearance. Learning the truth of the situation, Mio realizes that her days are numbered and takes steps to ensure that Takumi and Yuji are well-taken care of (and are able to take care of themselves) when she finally departs this earthly plane. As the rainy season's end approaches, all three must prepare for her eventual, poignant departure.

All the time while watching the movie, alongside with emotionally becoming more and more identified with these three people whom I came to care for, I found a rational part of me that kept assessing how the story would go. Is it really Mio coming back from heaven to fulfil a promise? Is it a woman who happens to look like Mio but has a story of her own? Or is everything just the imagination of the father and son? The revelation came, not in the form of a super twist dropped like a like a bomb, but through the last twenty minutes' gentle unfolding of past events that provide answers not only to the mystery of Mio's appearance, but also to many things we have noticed throughout the movie that register subconsciously (only subconsciously) as questions. Even more important, we saw another layer about the entire story that deepens our understanding of and care for this family.

But all this would not mean a thing without the wonderful, wonderful performance of Yuko Takeuchi as Mio. Shido Nakamura and Akashi Takei as father and son complement her performance perfectly and, together with the beautiful photography and heart-warming music, make this film the best in it genre in the decade.

The English title of "Be with you" is not devised haphazardly, but has a meaning.

Wonderful Life -Korean TV Series


People like to say, 'Love knows no national boundaries or age.' 'Love is fate.' or 'Love has the power to overcome all difficulties.' However, what is the ultimate stage of love? Marriage? This could sound ridiculously old-fashioned, especially to the younger generation. They still fall in love of course, but becoming a part of a system such as marriage can be troublesome, at best. And its responsibility is bothersome, as well. Most of all, it's unimaginable for many young people to give up their dreams for love and marriage. Put in a nice way, they are very practical, open-minded and liberal about their love life. However, they are selfish about love at the same time.

They are the generation of instant gratification. They still fall in love, but they refuse to give up their free life styles. They still get married, but they don't give up their careers. Their love life is just a personal choice, and they strongly resent being judged by other people's standards of right and wrong.

However, with love comes responsibility. Loving someone is about being responsible for your own feelings and your own decisions. Loving someone is agreeing to take responsibility for yourself and the person you love.

Wonderful Life is the story of two young college students....

(played by Kim Jae-won and Eugene) who accidentally become parents because of the one-night stand they had during vacation. They then get married. These young and inexperienced parents will show you what true love really means and how they become more mature by overcoming life's difficulties together and how they complete their love.

Han Seung-Wan (Acted by Kim, Jae-Won)
--- He's young and immature. He's a party animal. He's a very moody person. He's a frequent patron of the dance clubs around town. He's always welcome because he knows how to have fun. He's handsome and cool, so he's popular everywhere he goes. And he secretly enjoys the fact that he's popular. He believes that women can't help but loving him. He has the characteristics of Don Quixote and Peter Pan at the same time. He majors in aeronautics. After graduation, he becomes a co-pilot for Sky Castle Airlines. His first love is Chae-young. He goes to Singapore to see her, but he meets Se-jin there, instead. When he first meets Se-jin, she's heartbroken because of her previous relationship. He just wants to make her feel better.

--- She's very unique. She's outgoing and adventurous. She's a dreamer. She's curious and stubborn. She loves traveling and reading. She sometimes sets up a tent in the room and reads a book with a flashlight. And she likes to drink coffee in her favorite camping cup. She became a catholic after reading The Keys to the Kingdom by A.J Cronin. It's not easy to imagine her as a serious catholic because of her unusual personality, but she is. She wanted to be a diplomat. She unexpectedly gets pregnant while traveling as a college student. She can't give up the baby since she's a catholic. She decides to raise her baby by herself, but she gets married, thanks to her sister's plan.

Min Do-Hyeon (Acted by Lee, Ji-Hoon)
--- He's such a gentleman with good manners. He always seems neat and refined. He doesn't talk much. But he knows how to be terse and quick to the point. He's been successful throughout his life, but he's not interested in competing with others. He's very cynical; nothing really matters to him. He detests people who are obsessed with success and struggle to win. Nevertheless, he always wins and gets what he wants. He's the type of person that average people love to hate. He's the lovechild of the late founder of Sky Castle Airlines, Min Dae-seok. His biological mother died a long time ago. He was adapted and raised by Jang Eun-jo, the wife of Min Dae-seok.

Lee Chae-Young (Acted by Han, Eun-Jung)
--- She's gorgeous, proud, sexy and arrogant. But sometimes she can be quite naive and sweet. She's very good at changing herself to fit the way she wants other people think of her. No one doubts that she comes from a decent family and has a good education. However, in reality, she knows pain and sadness in life more than anyone. Her mother was the mistress of a Japanese businessman. She's ashamed of her background and tries to escape from it. She hasn't experienced any financial difficulties until her father abandoned her mother and her. Her mother went to Japan to look for her father only to realize she'd been dumped. Her mother opens a bar in Japan and lives there. Chae-young believes that it's good for everyone. Her mother was a part of her life she wanted to hide anyway.

Third Vision of Fatima Revealed
Vatican Announcement Stuns the World

On Saturday, May 13, 2000, the 83rd anniversary of the Fatima vision, the Roman Catholic Church, under the direction of the Bishop of Rome, revealed the contents of the third vision of Fatima to the world.

The startling announcement was front page news all across the world. The Los Angeles Times, for instance, wrote that the "the third secret of Fatima had become one of the most intriguing mysteries of modern times."

According to Vatican sources, the vision described a bishop in white, agonizingly making his way to the Cross through a sea of corpses of Christian martyrs, suddenly cut down by a fusillade of bullets. Together with the revelation, the Vatican gave an interpretation that applied in part, but failed to address completely major elements of the prophecy.

Vatican officials concluded that the third Fatima prophecy applied to the past, especially to the attempted assassination of Pope John Paul II in St. Peter's Square in 1981.



The Vatican found compelling evidence to make this association during the subsequent trial of Mehmet Ali Agca, the Turkish gunman. During his 1985 trial Agca made the statement that his assassination attempt was "connected to the third secret of the Madonna of Fatima." (Agca made his attack on May 13, 1981. The apparition at Fatima first occurred on May 13, 1917, exactly 64 years to the day earlier).

The Vatican, and especially Pope John Paul II, found the coincidence of dates compelling, but they were completely awestruck by Mehmet Ali Agca's later trial announcement because no one knew the contents of the prophecy except for the Pope himself and a very few of the highest Papal Cardinals. The obvious conclusion was that Agca must have been inspired to make that claim through supernatural means. It meant that the Holy Spirit had used the gunman to verify the truth of the Fatima prophecy.

If any questions about the truth of the prophecies remained, they were swept away by Agca's comments. The incident guaranteed a permanent embrace of Lucia dos Santos' visions by the Catholic Church. All three visions were defined as true prophecy and Lucia's two cousins, partners to the vision, were beatified by the Pope. Lucia herself could not be beatified at the same time because she is still alive.

The first vision predicted the end of World War I and the coming of World War II. The second was an appeal to pray for the conversion of Russia, which occurred with the fall of the Soviet Union in 1992. The third vision, sealed by Lucia under orders that it could not be opened until 1960 (apparently by the instruction of the vision of Mary), was never revealed. Not until now.

Agca's claim with respect to Fatima and the fact that he said he had not acted alone (many high officials say he was a paid gunman acting under orders of the Soviet Union and communist Bulgaria) seem to tie the Fatima prophecies to the collapse of the Soviet Union, the second of the three aspects of the visions. The actions of Pope John Paul II following the assassination attempt played a central role in that collapse and the subsequent re-conversion of Russia, starting first with Perestroika in 1984 and leading to the total collapse of Russian communism in 1992.

Those events, and the fact that the papal shooting coincided with the anniversary of the Fatima visions made a deep and personal impact on John Paul II. He felt that his life had been spared by Mary, the Virgin of Fatima, for the purpose of the prophecy, especially with respect to his role in the conversion of Russia. John Paul realized that these visions came from the Holy Spirit and were very important.

The facts surrounding the second vision speak for themselves and cannot be argued. However, the Vatican's interpretation of the third vision seems to leave large vacancies. It does not, for instance, take into account the corpses of the martyrs that surround him as he is gunned down. Nor does it address the torturous process and singular character of his resolve to reach the Cross.
The "bishop clothed in white," who is the pope, "makes his way with great effort toward the cross amid the corpses of those who were martyred. He, too, falls to the ground, apparently dead, under a burst of gunfire."

The fact that the vision states that the bishop, "too", falls to the ground indicates that the sea of Christian bodies through which he is making his way were killed in the same time frame. The same day at most, or more likely within the same hour. A bloodbath seems to have occurred in the vision. Not in St. Peter's Square, but inside the basilica itself. Invaders have taken over the Vatican by force. They have murdered the Pope.

This does not describe the shooting of John Paul II in 1981. The vision more likely points forward. To something far more momentous. To something that has not yet occurred. It seems to describe the linchpin of the tribulation -- the end of the 62 weeks in Daniel's vision -- the defining moment when the world passes from the millennium of Christian rule and reverts back to the reign of Satan. "And after the sixty-two weeks an anointed one will be cut off." (Dn. 9:26). The Fatima prophecy and its revelation show that this terrible event has now drawn very close.

In Daniel's prophecy, what follows the assassination can only be described as utter chaos: "the city and the sanctuary will be destroyed by a prince who will come. His end will come in catastrophe and, until the end, there will be war and all the devastation decreed." (Dn.9:26).

The vision describes the bishop as "apparently dead". To all eyes in Babylon, he would be. But those whose bodies die in Christ cannot be killed (Jn.11:25). Daniel states that the beast will be brought before God and "a court will be held and his power will be stripped from him, consumed, and utterly destroyed. And sovereignty and kingship and the splendours of all the kingdoms under heaven will be given to the people of the saints of the Most High." (Dn.7:26-27). Those who have obeyed Jesus Christ will be raised up to eternal life. The bishop's apparent lifelessness will be reversed. He will only have appeared to die. "After the three-and-a-half days, God breathed life into them and they stood up, and everybody who saw it happen was terrified; then they heard a loud voice from heaven say to them, 'Come up here', and while their enemies were watching, they went up to heaven in a cloud." (Rv.11:11-12).

Metaphorically, the reference to the bishop's 'white' clothing is, in itself, quite significant. It cannot help but remind us of Ezekiel's prophecy which refers to a man in white marking the sign of the cross on the heads of those chosen by God for salvation. "In the middle of them was a man in white, with a scribe's ink horn in his belt. (God) called to the man in white and said to him, 'Go all through the city, all through Jerusalem, and mark a cross on the foreheads of all who deplore and disapprove of all the filth practiced in it (in the city)." (Ez.9:2-6).

The mark described here is an obvious reference to baptism. Therefore, the bishop's role on earth is precisely that described in Ezekiel's prophecy.


Why Is This Third Prophecy So Important?

Daniel has informed us that the world we know (our Christian-oriented world) will collapse in a "Great Revolt". This event is currently in progress. Scripture teaches that when the revolt nears its peak, Satan will raise up a man of perdition (a beast) who will deceive mankind, topple the Christian Church and bring the civilized world to a chaotic and fiery end.

He will be successful in his efforts because he will have the full backing of Satan himself, who will be freed from the chains that now bind him in the Abyss, and allowed by God to come back and deceive all those who have fallen victim to the apostasy of the revolt. (2 Thes.2:11-12).

According to Paul, although Satan is destined to reappear in response to the Revolt, the madman who carries out his purpose on earth cannot appear openly until the "one who is holding him back is first removed". (2 Thes.2:7). The person who is holding the Rebel back is the 'anointed one' that Daniel said 'would be cut off at the end of the sixty two weeks' (Dn.9:26).

These words refer to the assassination of a great, powerful and popular Christian leader, almost certainly the Bishop of Rome (see 'The Last Days of Babylon', Chapter 25, "An Anointed One Cut Off"). The recent revelation of the third prophecy of Fatima virtually guarantees that the 'Anointed One' who is holding back the wrath is the Pope -- "the bishop in white", holder of the highest priestly office in the Christian Church.

The priesthood in this prophecy is important. This assassination mirrors the circumstances that led up to the appearance of Antiochus, the great desolater of the Jewish Temple during the Greek occupation of Jerusalem. Jesus, Himself, directed us to Daniel's description of the last days, and much of Daniel's prophecy is built on the events that surrounded the rise and fall of Antiochus Epiphanes IV, around 170 B.C. It was Antiochus' forces that put up the desolating sacrilege in the Temple that Jesus predicted would be re-created in Christian terms during the last days.

As a prelude to the erection of the desolating sacrilege, immediately before Antiochus came to power, his forces assassinated Onias, the immensely popular High Priest of Jerusalem. The prophecy of Daniel with respect to the 'cutting off of the Anointed One' just before the tribulation (Dn.9:26) shows that the assassination of Onias (2 Macc.4:34-38) is a foreshadow of a similar catastrophe involving a great Christian bishop at the end of time.

Paul confirmed all this when he told the people of Thesalonia that the Great Rebel who was destined to enthrone himself in God's sanctuary at the end could not appear until this person was first removed (2 Thes.5-7). Since it is this Christian prince that God has assigned the function of holding back the wrath from the earth, none of the terminal events described by Daniel can happen until this horrendously violent act takes place.

Paul's words warn that as a consequence of this fateful removal, the Beast will appear openly on earth, precipitating a wrath from which there will be no escape. Since the success of the Revolt will prove the true measure of the world's collapse in faith, the assassination of the Christian bishop at the end of it will be the ultimate act of violence which finalizes that rebellion and condemns the world to death. .

By removing from the world the priest whose office oversees the communion sacrifice, the safety of the Cross which flows into the world through the perpetuation of that sacrifice will evaporate, taking away with it the mercy that stayed the execution and allowed the world to live.

As proof of this, and to make certain the mercy of the Cross is neutralized, the Rebel whose allies conducted the bishop's murder will erect in the sanctuary where the Cross once stood (and where the communion ceremony once took place) the 'abomination of desolation'. Jesus said that when we see this take place, we must head for the mountains and take cover immediately.

The revelation of Fatima's third prophecy not only adds further credence to the truth of Jesus Christ, and to the writings of scripture, it again proves that all people who believe in Jesus belong to God, no matter what church affiliation they adhere to.

Revelation of Fatima's third prophecy would never have been made public had the current Pope not been the object of assassination, and had Agca, the gunman, not publicly proclaimed that he was attempting to fulfil the third vision of Fatima (a vision he had no way of knowing applied to the shooting of the Pope). So the shooting of John Paul II has to be considered part and parcel of the Fatima vision.

But (as is almost always the case in the Bible) God has brought it to fruition in pairs. This time not just as a warning of an impending event of far greater moment, but as the mechanism to make that warning public. It turned a card in the Vatican and made them reveal the prophecy -- a prophecy that four previous Popes, for obvious reason, never wanted to make public.

The fact of its revelation at this particular time is very sobering.

The third prophecy of Fatima shows that the ghastly spectacle it heralds and the terminal implications that surround it are now close at hand. The time for repentance is almost at an end. There is very little time left. The madman is at the portals. Anyone who has not made a commitment to Christ must do so very soon or be left to the fate of the Apostasy now sweeping the planet.

Lessons that men wish women would learn

What would men do without women? I received various reactions, such as "We’d be richer," "We’d be empty," "We’d have no one to care for, no one to love," and "I’d be able to watch my favorite channel."

In the spirit of fun, I asked some men: What lesson would you give women for a smoother relationship?

The answers were not surprising at all, and they clamored to have their thoughts published, some claiming it’s worth reminding all you women out there. * * *





• We are not horses. Allow us to look at other women. We can be distracted without necessarily being derailed.

Men complain that women take offense when they look at other women. Men hasten to add that looking at other women doesn’t necessarily mean they covet them. Men claim that they just can’t help but admire beauty. They even joke that they don’t stop their wives and girlfriends from looking at other men. And all the while, of course, we get offended. Why shouldn’t we? And why should men have a roving eye? They married us for better and for worse. They also deformed our female bodies from childbirth. * * *
• Women should learn that relationships can never be "almost perfect" all the time. There will be good times and some bumps.

Some men said that in every relationship, there’s what is called a honeymoon period. In the first couple of months, someone said that as a married couple, his relationship was ideal… perfect almost.

So, women should just stop referring to "before" and "you used to be…," as well as "You always do…(all negative and stated)." * * *
• If you don’t want an answer, don’t ask the question.

Or, to put it another way, "If you ask a question and you don’t want an answer other than the one you expected, that then don’t ask the question."

Men say that women often know the answer to confrontational questions, but they ask the question anyway even if they know that the truth can hurt them. Why do women persist in knowing and asking and hoping that men will give them an answer they want? Or worse, even a lie. Guys assert that if we pride ourselves on possessing women’s instincts, then we should know the answer he’ll give us which can cause more pain. So why do we ask? * * *
• When you want something, say it outright.

Insinuations and subtle hints are a waste of time and a waste of energy. Because of that, men claim women love playing word games or just games. They are amazed at how eloquent we are when we are when angry, but seemingly out of words when we are not. Could women stop dropping hints when they want something and just say it straight out? * * *
• Don’t prod us to lengthen our answers when we can give them in short, decisive ones: yes and no.

The words "yes" and "no" are in a man’s dictionary. They remind us they are perfectly acceptable answers.

Men can’t understand why women can’t take a simple "yes" or a simple "no" for an answer. They complain of being pushed to make a longer response when their "yes" or "no" seems clear enough.

Statistics state that women use an average of 20,000 communication words, sounds and gestures in a day, while men use only an average of 7,000. We say that they have accepted that women speak in paragraphs. "They wish women would realize that men can get their message across in a word." * * *
• Men don’t like justifying their decision. That’s undermining their authority and challenging their wisdom.

"When women ask us to make a decision, will they accept it?" one man asked. * * *
• Avoid blackmailing us with pouts and tears.

You may be able to get what you want sometimes, but definitely, you won’t get it all the time. Our partners see this as one of the main causes of disagreements, some men say.

Females think men are just too insensitive. Males think women are too sensitive. Men feel that a woman’s wily ways can be entertaining at times. However, done too much and too often, they say it becomes irritating. * * *
• We have lives outside of a relationship. We can’t be thinking of you all the time.

Some men feel suffocated when women expect too much from them. They sense pressure from their wives when they don’t call in during the day or forget to ask if they’ve had a meal. Men like more freedom in their relationships with their friends. If there’s some oversight, men prefer that their mates not crucify them for it. * * *

I’m not going to say the men have raised legitimate and reasonable points. I’m not going to write that women should open their minds to the men’s pleas. But probably Vittorio Gassman, an Italian actor of the ’60s, best described the age-old relationship between genders. He said, "Men don’t understand anything about women and women understand nothing about men. And it’s probably better that way."

What is a Geisha?



The word Geisha means "artist" in Japanese. Geisha are professional hostesses who entertain guests through various performing arts in tea houses called O-chaya. They are trained in a number of traditional skills such as Japanese ancient dance, singing, playing instruments such as the Shamisen, flower arrangement, wearing kimo no, tea ceremony, calligraphy, conversation, alcohol serving manners and more. Geisha continue to study and perfect these skills throughout their careers as geisha.


A successful geisha must demonstrate beauty, grace, artistic talent, charm, impeccable etiquette, and refinement. Only guests with a long time connection with the tea house are allowed and tea houses generally don't take on new clients without an introduction. The profession of a geisha is a very expensive business and a geisha party can easily cost thousands of US dollars. The total number of geisha in the 1920's was 80,000, but today the number of geisha has dropped to 10,000 due to the westernizing of Japanese culture.


What is the Role of Geisha?


Geisha must train themselves in various traditional arts such as classical dancing, playing the Shamisen, and several styles of singing in the hanamachi (geisha community). Today, geisha women may also be models or go on international tours, for example.Geisha work by entertaining guests at expensive tea houses. They will serve drinks, talk with the guests, and perform.Geisha women maintain many different relationships with men. They are not prostitutes. It is appropriate for geisha to have a patron (danna), whom she is involved with emotionally, economically, and sexually, however it is up to the geisha whether she wants one or not. Geisha wear their hair in a bun or a uniform style with a single comb and two pins. They also wear elegant kimonos and beautiful white make-up.Geisha also entertain at business banquets or parties for a considerable amount of money. There they engage in conversation, and perform for the guests. Geisha will either perform "Tachikata" which mainly does traditional Japanese dance or "Jikata" which mainly sings or plays an instrument. Tachikata are usually the maiko girls while Jikata are older geisha women. They also pay greater attention to the guest of honor. Geisha also do not discuss anything that was said at a party or business meeting outside.
Geisha do not prepare or serve food. They also never have a one-night stand.


How Do You Become a Geisha?

To become a geisha, you had to be the daughter of a geisha or accepted by an O-chaya. Usually beautiful little girls who were orphaned or from poverty stricken families were sold to an O-chaya by relatives. The O-chaya would invest a lot of money to train these girls and dress them in brightly colored kimonos. In the O-chaya, the okamisan ("mother" who runs the house) taught the girls. They performed various chores while observing the geisha. When they reach a certain level, the girls become "Maikos" (15-20 year old girls) which are apprentices to geisha. A maiko accompanies a geisha on her appointments to learn and become accustomed to the job. Usually at the age of 20, a maiko girl decides if she is going to become a geisha. If she gets married she must quit. The initiation ceremony is called "erigae" and means "changes of collars". At one time this was when the collar of a maiko changed from red to white. Also, this was when a girl underwent mizu-age, a ceremony that revolved around the girls losing her virginity to the "highest bidder." This does not take place anymore.


History of Geisha

During the early 11th century, two women of noble birth created a new dance to entertain the warrior's circles. Representing the court dress of the warriors, they wore white costumes. They wore a tall hat, long white gown, and sword at their waist. The dance caught on and over time the costume changed to a black hat and red skirt. Then both the hat and sword disappeared. Many people believe that these women were the early predecessors of geisha However, others believe geisha were originally men who entertained in a society called the "water world." This world contained prostitutes, entertainers and their patrons. Eventually, there was a transformation from all male geisha to all female geisha. After geisha became more popular, they began entertaining in tea houses and began defining what was in, in Japanese culture. In 1779, authorities were angry with the conduct of the geisha. They were upset that they did not pay taxes on their wages. Disciplinary rules were formed and a code of conduct was created, which is still upheld today.

The importance of dance in the Japanese culture and to Geisha most likely originates from ancient religious practices. The nineteenth century saw the development of many of the dances that are now the most common dances performed by Geisha at both private parties and public events such as festivals. Dances such as the Miyako Odori and the cherry dances, dances that originate in the Japanese cultural value of Cherry Blossoms, arise out of the nineteenth century.
The shamisen is a lute-like instrument made out of redwood with three strings of braided silk attached to the arm by three large ivory pegs. The wooden body is backed with parchment. The instrument is played with an ivory or hardwood plectrum. The playing of the shamisen dates back to T'ang China when the instrument was given as a gift from the T'ang court to Japanese Buddhist envoys.


Before discussing matters of appearance in Geisha, it is important to note the significance of the color red. There is a word in Japanese, ko itten, which means "touch of scarlet." The word is used as an affectionate term for women, especially Geisha girls. The use of the color red in dress and makeup is very significant to Japanese society. Red is denoted as a color of beauty and happiness. Red undergarments are thought to ward off menstrual pain and keep the female reproductive organs healthy and functioning. Red is also thought to be erotic to men. Geishas traditionally wear crimson lining under their kimonos (depending on season)as well as bright red lipstick made from safflower extract and red rouge, made from the petals of crimson flowers.
In the early era of Geisha, when most patrons were shoguns, the costumes that the Geisha Girls wore were very warrior-like, including large hats and decorative swords. As the culture flourished, garments became much more feminine. Geisha began to wear the traditional kimono. The color, pattern, and style of kimono was dependent on season, but the kimono was always worn in three layers (the outer kimono and two layers of undergarments), regardless of season. In the winter, Geisha could be seen wearing a three-quarter length "overcoat" lined with hand painted silk over their kimono. In the spring, the waistband that Geisha wear (obi) became very important. During the springtime, the waistband was often more expensive than the kimono and ornately decorated. The spring kimono also had a crimson lining. Come summer, the lining was removed, and the kimonos were typically of brighter colors and different designs. Again in autumn, the crimson lining would reappear as well as new colors and designs. Geisha wore a flat-soled sandal outdoors, and went barefoot indoors. When weather was bad, the women wore raised wooden clogs that are attached to the foot in the same way that the usual thong sandal is. Maiko, geisha in training, wore a special black lacquered wooden clog.


The hairstyles of Geisha have varied considerably over history. Before the time of T'ang China, it was most common for women to wear their hair down but during the time of T'ang China, it became popular to tie one's hair up. Women then returned to wearing their hair parted in the center and hanging straight down. Again during the seventeenth century, women began pulling all their hair up again and it is during this time that the traditional hairstyle, shimada, developed. This is the hairstyle worn by Geisha and means generally thatall the hair is pulled back in one section. There are four major types of the shimada: Taka Shimada,a high chignon (a kind of knot of hair), usually worn by young, single women; Tsubushi shimada, a more flattened chignon generally worn by older women; Uiwata, a chignon that is usually bound up with a piece of color cotton crepe; and a style that ends up looking like a divided peach, typically worn by maiko. These hairstyles were decorated with elaborate hair-combs and hairpins, which often symbolized status. In the seventeenth century and after the Meiji Restoration period, hair-combs were large and conspicuous, generally more ornate for higher-class women. During the Meiji restoration and in this modern era, smaller less conspicuous hair-combs are more popular. The traditional makeup of the Geisha is probably the most common feature associated with the culture because of its striking contrast to contemporary makeup. Under the influence of T'ang China, early geisha and other women of the period would dye their brows a golden yellow.

Beginning in the Sixteenth century, the Geisha began using a white foundation made from rice powder that has since been replaced by a white cream. Geisha wear bright red lipstick, made from safflower extract and often worn only in the center of the lips to emphasize delicacy, femininity and the desired miniature effect. Light red rouge made from crimson flower petals was also worn. Until the Meiji period, Geisha and other performers were known to permanently stain their teeth black, the significance of which is not certain. The world of Geisha is a culture that allows Japanese women to be independent and economically self-sufficient, as they do not marry (as they would cease to be a Geisha if she did).


It is probably the only profession in Japanese which the women are consistently ranked above the men in the profession. Geisha also allows a woman to work into old age and because of the high cultural value on this preservation of traditional art and culture gives the woman an inherent value and respect that she might otherwise be unable to obtain.


The Significance of a Geisha to Men in Japan

Some geisha do develop intimate relationships with clients, who become their patrons, this is part of the picture. Until quite recently, nearly all marriages in Japan were arranged by the respective families of the bride and groom, with the main ambition being to preserve rank rather than securing the personal happiness of the parties involved. Under these circumstances, a Japanese man of means would typically come to have two women in his life, his wife and his loved one. It came to be considered normal for wealthy and powerful men to have liaisons with geisha. For an attractive girl whose family situation gave her little hope getting married for real, this arrangement could be attractive too. She could lead a better life than would otherwise have been possible and she could actually have a say in who she accepted as her patron.


How are Geisha Hired For Parties?

If a customer wants to call a geisha or maiko to a party, he/she asks the okami of an o-chaya, then the okami lets a management office (yakata) know about the request. Yakata are in charge of sending geisha or maiko girls to places, such as o-chaya, restaurants, hotels, and Japanese inns, depending on customers' request. If a customer is renting a room in an o-chaya for a dinner party, the customer will be charged for the food and geisha in addition to the cost for renting the room. The charge for calling the geisha is called "o-hanadai"

Unless you are referred by someone who is already a customer of a o-chaya, you aren't allowed to enter an o-chaya. O-chaya are very exclusive places. Usually, the charge for the service is billed to the customer from the o-chaya later, so, it's important for the o-chaya to have a trusting relationship with customers. O-chaya don't do business with a newcomer without the proper referral. However, many well-known restaurants and Japanese inns in Kyoto have some kinds of connection to an o-chaya, so you can request them to send geisha women to your party.
When you do request, make it clear that what types of performance you would like. There are two basic types of geisha. One is called "tachikata" which mainly does traditional Japanese dance (mai). The other is called "jikata" which mainly sings, or plays an instrument. Tachikata are usually maiko girls and jikata are older geisha women. The cost for a party with geisha varies depending on the number of geisha, food, drink, hours, and so on. But, you can even have a party beginning at about $150 per person for a regular two-hour appointment. Consult with restaurants or inns in Kyoto who have connections to hanamachi.


What is the Relationship Between the Wife and a Geisha?

Geisha women are not perceived as a threat to a marriage in Japanese culture. Traditionally, the wife and geisha have completely separate roles in society. Usually, the relationship between a man and his geisha is not based on love and is not meant to disrupt the marriage between a husband and wife.

Wives ususally know who their husbands geisha are, and in fact, there are some times when their paths cross. During the Obon Festival and during the New Year's celebration, geisha will typically visit the homes of important customers and bring gifts to their wives. Geisha also give an occasional dance performances specifically for the wives and daughters of a geisha's or ochaya's customers. Because a wife may not persuade her husband, she may also, at times, seek the advice of a geisha or request that the geisha persuade the husband to do something that may be in the best interest of the family.

In addition to acting on the wife's behalf, a geisha may also offer business advice, as she is likely to hear the details of important business deals while performing or serving businessmen. At times, a geisha may also attempt to encourage a man's talents or bring them out, as it would be socially unacceptable for a man to suggest that he is talented in an area.

In the past, geisha would perform at the weddings of their customers' daughters. This is not as common now, but geisha still are present at the funerals of important customers. Often geisha will be in charge of making funeral arrangements or making other preparations after the death of a patron. This can be of great help to a family in their time of grief, and is almost always welcomed with open arms.


Will Geisha Survive in Japanese Culture?

The number of geisha has been declining for primarily two reasons. First, the training to become a geisha is long and rigorous. Second, the variance in levels of geisha, as far as cost, has all but disappeared. Geisha have become an elite group and have therefore become very expensive.

Fewer and fewer men are willing to pay the high cost of a geisha when other entertainers (i.e. hostesses) are available. Kyoto and the area around the city maintains the highest number of geisha as well as having a more traditional culture of geisha. Tokyo brags the second highest population of geisha, though these geisha and teahouses tend to be less traditional. Tokyo geisha lack the formalized older sister/younger sister relationship. Geisha in Kyoto are more conscious of being a geisha at all times. On the whole, in Tokyo, geisha is seen as another career.

Traditionally, geisha live lives separate from the rest of society. "Ideally, what a geisha brings to the banquet room is an elegance that has been cultivated, like a rare orchid, in the special environment in the flower and willow world. Whatever is special about geisha and imbues them with a certain mystique arises because their lives are set apart from everyday society. Today the walls of their world are art and discipline" (Dalby, 217). In the past, geisha were often sold to a teahouse by their family as a means of earning money, and for their daughters to get an education of some sort. Now the choice to become a geisha is less for economic reasons, and more as a career choice like any other. If a geisha had daughters, they were traditionally sent to a special geisha school with the intention that they would grow up to be geisha like their mothers. Now the children of geisha are sent to public school like all other children. This is one illustration of how, in the recent past, geisha have been losing the strict division between their lives and the rest of society.


We can observe a dramatic decline in the number of geisha. Nowadays, there are very few genuine geisha left in Japan. This is partly due to the decreasing demand. Most of the Japanese prefer (and can afford) hostesses when they want to go out and have some fun with women outside the "net of the family and workplace". The decline is also due to the supply. For the Japanese girls it is much easier to become a Western-type entertainer, a hostess.

It is possible that in a few years it will be difficult to find any geisha left. If we can, it would probably not the real, traditional type. Due to tourism and the interest of the businessmen visiting Japan, this institution will probably survive, but maybe in a modified form. It is possible that the Japanese women who used to become geisha (who wish for independence and try to get rid of the accustomed mother/wife role), can find more opportunity for success in work. In spite of these, it would be positive if this uniquely interesting patch of the Japanese society, would survive. We should not see it (as many Western people do) as prostitution. A love for the traditional arts seems to be the most important motivating factor for women who choose to become geisha. They are respected as preservers of traditional art and culture.

The Sony Ericsson K750i is undoubtedly the most highly anticipated model of 2005 for the majority of mobile phone users. This waiting was caused by many things, but mainly because of information about the phone appeared much earlier then the phone was officially announced. We mentioned the phone in December of 2004 for the first time, and the functionality of the phone was clear then. Keeping the functionality in mind, we thought it would be classified as a T650. The latest reorganization of the product line saw the T-series removed, and the manufacturer decided to renew the indexes. In 2003, the leader of SE's line was the T610, which was a bestseller and is still sold in some places. A new device was later introduced with a few improvements in a similar style to the T68 and T68i. Keep in mind these facts for the end of the review.




The new leader of the company, the K750i, had the name of Clara inside the company. Similar to previous leading models, the emphasis is put on the most demanded and actively promoted functions in the market; for 2005, this means a quality camera and Mp3 player, all other functions were also changed in accordance to the device itself. As for the previous models, the device inherited all of their strengths and the hardware became more powerful, which is necessary for properly working and storing pictures from the 2-mega-pixel camera. The processor operating speed and its power grew, which is why there were many software problems in the development of the K750i. The main challenge for engineers was not the functionality of the phone, but forming a specific set of characteristics to fit in a body comparable to the previous phones. The company decided that the user should see not only the inheritance of features, but in design as well. Why should they accustom users to a smaller size if the next device in this class will have larger dimensions? That is not only illogical, but it also pushes the audience away. The company's lack of resources has made developing modern devices in a short time next to impossible.

The phone itself will be presented in 2 colors, which is very interesting. The operators will be offered models in more colors, but with different indexes; for example, the K750 copy for T-Mobile is the D750.

The dimensions of the K750 are quite comfortable (100x46x19.5 mm, 99 grams) but unusual for a phone with these functions. The device belongs to the group of models with double-side orientation, a phone on the one side and a camera on the other. The integration of a phone interface and a digital camera allows users no need to put extra effort in learning how the camera works, since everything is similar to usual cameras. Looking at the front panel you see the standard layout of keys and functions. The first unusual thing is that the loudspeaker gaps are placed very high on the phone, almost on the top edge. This is caused by the small size, since the dimensions haven't changed but the filling has. This position hasn't hampered the loudspeaker work in anyway, the speaker is heard well, and the position means nothing. The decrease of the loudspeaker power may be considered a negative factor; we managed to get the same sound, volume of call, melody reproduction and mp3 player as on the models of the current line. Energy consumption of the loudspeaker is much lower, and that is an evident plus.

The screen has undergone no changes and is the same as previous models, such as the K700 and K600. It has the same resolution of 176x220 pixels (28x36 mm) showing up to 262K (TFT) colors. Physically, its matrix has no differences from the previous models, and using another controller causes the increased number of shown colors. You won't see any principal difference between 65K and 262K colors in the screen, the picture is good, vivid and the interface drawing is very pleasant. The display gives way to Samsung and Sharp models in the picture brightness, but in general belongs to its own group rather than to the middle-class. No problems appear in the screen, and moreover, it is obviously one of the best in this form-factor. The picture fades in the sun, but text remains readable. To tell the truth, small font-size prevents from seeing all the necessary details sometimes but this doesn't concern SMS and names in a phonebook, here everything is all right.

The keypad is made of plastic and number keys are placed in a single block. Working with the keypad is of normal comfort and that is seen as a compromise. One can't call the keys uncomfortable but they don't represent the best variant. The majority will find the keypad acceptable and nothing more. The backlighting is white and well seen in various conditions.

The joystick is unusual in the model. It is made in the style of the "soft touch" technology, when the slightest deviation allows controlling movement along the screen. It doesn't look comfortable at first sight, accidental reactions are frequent, and a feeling arouses it lacks some harshness. With time you get so accustomed to the joystick that on the other phones they seem too tough and hard to control. Many people found it very comfortable having acquainted themselves with the K750.

An innovation of the model, an Activity Menu button, is above the joystick in the middle. In some ways we see a combination of interface changes and its hardware support. There are three bookmarks in the Activity Menu; on one you can add personal tags relating to frequently used functions and the third bookmark serves for specifying links to various resources. The main bookmark, shown by default, is last events list; they may be missed calls or calendar events. That is in some kind a copy of an event list in the latest models by Siemens. This is the main interface difference of the model from other phones by the company. It should be considered as a prototype of future phones' functionality, that will mainly be applied to the K750i based models.

There is an IrDA gap on the top end of the phone, and a turn On/Off button is also here. A new interface slot Fast Port is placed on the bottom end. The necessity of changing the interface is caused by the growth of data transmission speed. The company takes such steps very rarely and they look well-taken. Also it leads to the total change of all the accessories starting with the chargers and ending with cables. Unfortunately, there is no standard earphones output, and connection may be established only via Fast Port. Considering the peculiarity of the phone construction, the phone adds only about half of centimeter, the same is right for Nokia phones.

If a strict limitation was put on the phone size, the company took another solution for accessories. A USB cable provided in the kit is long and that is a minus for those who will use it in several places. The majority of today's PCs have front USB outputs, thus there is no need for a long cable. The same can be said for notebooks and other portable gadgets. The company originally planned to deliver a short cable, which would have been ideal for transporting from one place to another. Another minus are the opened pins in the phone connector, there is a possibility to damage them when carrying it in a bag without a special cover, and thus it seems not to be much of a mobile solution.

Unfortunately, the hot USB connection is not ideal and greatly differs from the one in the Motorola E398. Installing drivers is always necessary; otherwise the device won't be identified. Also, we should mention, only memory card data is acceptable, access to the user data is denied. That is not a serious minus, since the same data is kept on the card and all the applications, photos, images are saved there by default. This allows keeping the device on when using a USB connection, which allows the device to serve as an external drive based on MS Duo cards in some way.

A memory card slot is on the left-side surface closed with a shutter. In difference to smartphones, a rubber shutter was not applied here, and that is a conscious construction simplification. The shutter is tough and needs pressing to be fixed. If treated wrong, it may be pulled out.

Up to 4 GB of memory is supported and cards up to 2 GB are announced. A 64 MB memory card is included in the kit, and that is a necessary minimum to add to the internal memory. The user has about 30 MB of free space at his disposal at first, which is enough for almost all the operations, and considering the device sees no difference between the card and the internal memory, no need for extra capacity appears. There is a button responsible for accessing the last musical function on the left side; it may be radio or mp3 player. You may activate playing from the play list or radio with one press. The solution is comfortable, considering the functions work in a background mode, the idea is the best and there are no copies in this parameter.

There is a coupled volume level button on the right surface designed like a swing. The button is small which prevents controlling the volume comfortably without concentrating on the button. The button is mostly used in photo mode; it is not frequently used for the phone functions (slam size and right-side disposition). The button (pressing and holding it) also activates voice dialing.
A flash and an active shutter covering the camera lens can be seen on the back panel. Opening the shutter activates the camera, now you can hold the phone horizontally and take photos.
The battery compartment has also undergone some changes caused by the necessity to make more room. A folding cover brings no potential problems and the construction is reliable. Naturally, there are users that will drop the phone on the floor without closing the cover and break it as a result. Using the phone normally you will have no problems with it.

There is a 900 mAh Li-Pon battery. According to the manufacturer, it is capable of working for up to 400 hours in the standby mode and up to 9 hours of talks. In Moscow the device averagely worked for about 3 days in case of one hour of talks, up to 45 minutes of using other functions and two hours' listening to the radio a day. If working less with the phone, it will work about 4 days. Full recharging takes about 2 hours. Using the device as an mp3 player brings no serious battery life shortage, the model works for about the same time period (energy consumption is comparable to the radio mode).

Menu
As for the menu organization, it is typical Sony Ericsson style with only Activity Menu added. You may assign tags or speed dialing of this or that function to the joystick deviations. The main menu is represented with four rows with three icons in each. You may also use fast navigation with the number series, and then switching to a needed item will only take a few seconds.

The input convenience remained on the same level, by pressing the # key you will bring up available language list, and be able to switch between them while text input.
The manufacturer decided to take care of additional horizontal theme bookmarks. This means that now when you are in the call list menu, which is called by pressing the Call button, you will see not only the last dialed numbers but gain the ability to switch between bookmarks with last missed/received calls (horizontal joystick presses). In the phone's menu such navigation is used in all possible places, it strongly simplifies usage of phone; menu's ergonomics in this model is extremely high. I'd like to point out those similar horizontal panels present in the phone book, settings menu and several other menu items as well.

The model is mainly a copy of the K700 with different menu representation, new themes, more phone book entries possible, but the base is the same. The next serious interface renewal is intended for the end of 2005, and for the mass products it will be summer 2006.
Phone book. As different to the previous models up to 500 names with all the fields filled in are supported (alike the K600, Z800). Summing up, we get more than 2000 numbers that are more than enough for the majority of users. And a poll carried out on our site proves the same.

Several phone numbers, e-mail address and other contact information may be kept for a name in the internal memory. In settings you can choose the required fields, as well as sorting by various fields including name, surname, but the input field remains single. Such sorting is important only while transferring data from PC, for phone's entries it's actually useless. For separate names you can setup custom ring tones and own picture, while the incoming call you will hear the custom ring tone, as well as chosen image.

While information input you are free to scroll between bookmarks, on the first one phone number entering and their sorting according to types. Actually this organization reminds Outlook for some reason, it is convenient. Ability to add voice dialing to separate numbers stored under one name was introduced as well, there can be up to 40 of them in total. If you remember, earlier on voice dialing was supported only for names, and you had to make additional voice dialing bookmarks for other phones stored under the same contact.
While viewing the phone book you can scroll the numbers by the horizontal joystick's keypress, as well as watching other information. Of course the default number will be bind by you.

Traditionally the company believes that SIM-card and its memory will be used only in emergency situations, and not for storing information continuously. Viewing the entries on the SIM-card is possible from the separate menu item; they are not displayed in the common entry list.

Messages. All functions are basic for messages; templates and ability to create your own ones are present. For messages storing phone's memory as well as SIM-card's is used. Chat function is supported, on the whole I can say that the features are pretty common for any other phone.

MMS realization deserves to be mentioned as well, you can actually create clips, there are a lot of settings and it is not hard to use them, a truly unique quality that other phones lack.

E-Mail client supports sending and receiving messages, all possible encodings are supported.
In this menu Instant Messaging is present as well, sort of ICQ analogue.
Call list. In common list you will see up to 30 entries with date and time assigned to each. Near each of them an icon will explain to what type of call it refers (missed, received, dialed). Besides this in common list additional icons are present, they show if the phone number is present in the phone's memory, or SIM-card's. The list of missed calls can be viewed separately, it can store up to 10 entries. In the same menu item information about cost and length of last, all calls can be viewed. Moving through the separate lists can be made with the help of bookmarks, this actually saves your time greatly.

Entertainment. This menu item contains access to picture album, list of music files. Function MuiscDJ is interesting, although it is rather niche and will not be in demand around most of users. In this editor you can create your own ring tones and edit up to 4 tracks.

VideoDJ is an advances version of a MusicDJ function. It allows editing not just music, but adding pictures, notes and the result is a 3GP file possible to send via MMS or E-mail or just sent to another phone.

A graphical editor for drawing simple pictures is for creative people. Sometimes it helps to while away the time, though mainly the function is unnecessary.

Organizer. In organizer menu a lot of functions are stored at once, first of all - let's review the calendar. There are three types of event view, monthly, weekly and daily. In last case you see the list of all things to do and reminders, in two other modes you will notice the highlighted time with events or the day. Fast transfer to the required year, day and month is present. Everything is pretty simple and traditional, as well as schedule entry. Basically you get the chance to choose one of the 6 icons assigned to the action type, specify the place where it will occur, length and setup reminder (beforehand or in the entered time). I was unable find a way to setup reoccurrence rate; in my samples this feature was not present at all. From the editing menu for separate events you can choose another time and date, and that's it. Reminders work even if the phone is turned off, in case you turn on this function in the settings menu. Pleasant peculiarity of this model is that you can turn on/off automatic switch of profiles after the event had occurred, as well as return to the earlier set profile after the event is over. Basically we get analogue of Time Profile function in Nokia's phones.

To do list of rather ascetic, only two modes of events, call or reminder. On the other hand this is pretty enough, simplicity has its own advantages as well.

The phone has fully-functional search, which is organized for calendar, you just enter the words (or part of it) and after few seconds see all events which suit for the searched words. Function works very fast even if there are more than 100 entries, fast teleportation to the event is supported as well.

The phone has normal support of sending schedules to different devices (like always - IrDA, Bluetooth). You just choose the required interval (day, week, or month) and send all entries. I'd like to point out the fact that receiving device must support PIM function in order to receive and display these data files correctly. When we tried to send our own schedule to TV-set it was successful, although it could not be displayed (via IrDA). Same thing can be sent from your office or desktop PC without any additional software for synchronization.
Notes. The phone supports recording short text notes; in common list first word from each is displayed. This is not always convenient since you have to enter every note with "marker word", in order to remember what it is all about.


Alarm clocks. The phone has single as well as reoccurring alarm clock, which can be setup by the defined days of week. The alarm clocks will work even if the phone is turned off.


Countdown timer. Everything is pretty simple here, although same thing can be said about the stop-watch, it supports intervals. The phone has code storage, which was loved by many, working with calculator became more convenient.

Also a world time function are present.

Connectivity. From here you can setup all communication settings of the phone starting with WAP, GPRS, bluetooth and ending with synchronization. The standard usage will not be mentioned, it is pretty obvious, everything works. I'd like to stress that no problems were encountered while synchronizing; synchronization with devices runs smoothly, all profiles are supported.

The same menu provides local and remote localization settings, everything is also standard. The device supports the HID profile that allows using it as a remote controller for a computer or other device.

WAP. The browser was given separate menu item's sport, its version is 2.0 and it supports secured transfers, which is important for electronic transactions. With the help of browser you can download new wallpapers, themes, ring tones, everything is available on the original web-site.

Settings. Basically all settings related to the work with the phone are stored here, partly with the appearance of screens. I will not describe this menu item, since everything is too common. The presence of updated themes should be mentioned though, they actually differ the appearance nicely.

Radio. The phone has a built-in FM tuner; it is different from other versions in RDS support that is a creeping line with information transmitted by the radio station, a copy of the same function in car radio player. The phone's memory can store up to 20 radio stations; the stereo headset that is shipped in every package plays the role of antenna. In case you are using auto-search the phone will find about 6-7 stations with the strongest signal's coverage (at least it did it in Moscow) and store them in the memory. At the same time radio stations with weaker signal, but pretty suitable for listening will be skipped. They can be added into the list manually. This parameter is identical to Nokia phones, in which same problems are noticed.

Signal's playback quality is rather high, the headset allows setting up almost any volume, maximal level is extremely loud, and the music will suppress everything. The user can switch the radio into the loudspeaker mode; in this case people around will hear it as well. The radio's volume is pretty high.

Unfortunately, all control is made from the phone's keyboard. Channel switch which are stored in the memory - joystick's vertical movement. You can regulate the volume with the help of side-buttons. In case you want to turn off the radio and move on to other menu item's functions you will have to minimize it the way you are doing it on your desktop PC. In order to have the ability of changing channels again you will have to call Radio mode again. In minimized condition appropriate icon will appear.

Brief impressions from the radio can be described as positive, this phone's parameter is interesting, more than that, it offers quality realization. The radio is not worse than in Nokia's products and this speaks out for a lot of things, as well as the fact that the radio works in stereo mode.

File manager, memory capacity. The user can have about 30 Mb of free space (and if erasing everything, it will form about 41 MB), on which his data, files (pictures, video clips, and applications) can be stored. Remaining memory is occupied with pre-installed applications, which you cannot delete. Part of phone's memory is used as phonebook, call list etc.

The phone also gained simple file manager, with its help you can sort files into various folders, create directories in the phone's memory and store files in them. Using internal memory for file storage is impossible; the phone declined storing files with unknown extensions. But if you rename the file (its extension) it will be easily stored in the phone's memory. Meanwhile when we tried to view it, it lead to error; however the phone did not freeze and continued working. In future you will be able to send files via IrDA and Bluetooth in near future. Basically we face the fact that the phone can be used as file storage for very important files.

Player. The phone has built-in mp3 file player, as well as 3GP, mpeg4. The player is actually a nice tool for listening to mp3 files. Equalizer setup is present among the other settings (Bass, Voice, Tremble etc), as well as the ability of creating your own settings. Depending on these settings the sound will actually change, this is noticeable. The presence of a memory card turns the K750 into a fully-functional mp3 player with good quality.

Camera. The device is equipped with a 2 MP camera with a CMOS matrix. This phone is the first widely spread one to have a 2MP camera if not considering Sharp 902. Another peculiarity of the model is the presence of an autofocus. It works for any distance including the Macromode.
The device supports three possible resolutions - 1632x1224, 640x480, 160x120 pixels. Two types of data compression, Normal and Fine, are at your disposal. The majority of the photos represented are in the Normal quality, and they look quite well. The photos differ in size almost two times depending on the resolution. Thus a photo in the Normal mode takes about 300 KB when the Fine quality gives 500-600 KB. Saving the photo takes the same time not depending on the case, that is about 1-2 seconds, and that is quite well for such a file size. It feels like saving goes in a background mode, and a user can take more photos. If to take several photos one after another (not a Burst mode but just successively) then you'll notice slightly slowing writing speed (to 3-4 seconds). According to subjective feelings the device buffer is expected for 2 MB of memory.

The camera settings look the following way:

Automatic camera off. When not used the camera turns off automatically in 30 seconds, 1, 2 or 3 minutes.
Shutter sound. You can choose on of the three shutter sounds but not turn the sound off.
Spot photometry. The function is unusual for a mobile phone.
White balance. A possibility to choose between an automatic mode or Incandescent, Fluorescent, Daylight, Cloudy.
Light. Backlighting activation, also may be turned on by shifting a left-side cover.
Effects. Several effects may be applied to the photos, they are Negative, Solarize, Sepia, Black & White.
Timer is activated for a certain time period for self shooting.
Night mode is for shooting in the dark. Noises raise on a photo, exposition is increased (you shouldn't move the device in order not to get a blurry photo).

Shooting mode.

Normal mode, that is taking usual photos. A multiple mode (Burst 4) allows taking four photos for a series. Landscape is a very interesting mode that allows taking rather unordinary photos, has no rivals for the moment. The last mode is taking photos with frames, photo resolution decreases automatically.

Macromode allows turning the mode automatically.

The screen may serve as a viewfinder when in the shooting mode. The picture moves very smoothly and everything is clearly seen. Number keys help in switching between various functions and shooting parameters quickly that fastens work greatly.

Autofocus works well in the majority of cases and yields only to fast moving objects, for instance, cars. The picture often comes merged then. At the same time, a running man is always well seen, the picture is clear.

Processing a photo after shooting is a peculiarity of the phone. Before shooting you see a very sharp picture on the screen and half-pressed shutter button calls focusing like in usual cameras. When pressing it you take a photo and that is when the picture looses its sharpness. The explanation is the phone's processing algorithm; it spends no time to draw a picture on the screen and makes a rough sketch that takes less time. If entering a folder with photos and show a single photo on the screen you'll see it is sharp and the picture is quite saturated.
Let's acquaint with the photos taken in various conditions. We have chosen Samsung P750 equipped with a 2MP camera with a CCD matrix (all the pictures taken with the device are of the maximum resolution and quality). I'd like to say in advance, the Sony Ericsson product proved better though having a CMOS matrix.

You need only to compare several photos to notice the Sony Ericsson K750's quality is higher. Comparing the phone with any model in the market we can surely call it the best since it has the highest picture quality than all the others. It was interesting to compare the quality of indoors photos since there are problems with the light.

Night photos looked quite acceptable and are sharp in the majority of cases. The best photos are taken when there is a bright light spot, in the even lighting, long distance between the camera and the shoot object causes noises, which is quite typical.

Only macromode and working in it remained unconsidered. You just need to set the Macro function in the menu and the device starts shooting objects in the distance of several centimeters. No cavils appear and this mode works well. You only should not forget to turn it off, since latter photos might be not as sharp.

There is a 4x digital zoom in the phone. Using it seems not well-taken since the picture gets worse.

There are quite various frames known by other models. In principle, a frame may be applied in a graphical editor and the same function in the shooting mode is for lazy ones. One may reveal his creative skills using a panoramic mode.

Video may be recorded in two resolutions (176x144, 128x96), file format is 3GP. Clip duration may be limited (up to 10 seconds) or unlimited.

You can't scroll video when watching it and the realization is subjectively average.

The conclusion is quite plain; the camera is the best in the market for today and the future 7-8 months. The device has no rivals in the picture quality. Moreover it is close to the ideal one considering the dimensions.

Java. The phone supports Java (MIDP 2.0), as well as 3D-engine, which allows launching truly three-dimensional games (not only Mascot Capsule is supported but JSR-184 also). Some games already known by other models of the company are preinstalled.


Impressions
The 40-tones polyphony provides with a sound of the Sony Ericsson K700 level or even lower, that also concerns preinstalled midi melodies. The loudspeaker volume has no reserve when on the maximum. It is frequently missed if using not mp3 melody as a call signal. The loudspeaker volume is a weakness of the phone, you should listen to it before buying to determine whether it is enough for you or not. The power of a vibrating alert is average, no peculiarities.


A photo of the caller and the number alternated with the name or a number type icon are shown at the incoming call.

This company leader is more then an interesting offer by Sony Ericsson, but also the strongest model in this class on the market. At least for half a year this model will dominate on the market, other manufacturers will have to attain to its level, determine their price policy from the fact of the Sony Ericsson K750i's existence. Samsung D600 and Nokia 6230i are the main rivals, or more precisely, the models compared with the K750 even today. As for Samsung's product, the functionality is comparable, but the point is another form-factor. In general, they may be put on the same level, since the models are much alike, though Samsung looses in camera possibilities. Nokia 6230i belongs to a lower class with a worse screen, camera and mp3 player. In general the device is evidently intended for another market segment, and only EDGE may be mentioned of possible advantages. The delay of Nokia 6230i's launch won't allow the model to prevail over the Sony Ericsson solution; they should be expected on the market at the same time.

Small body size, a complete set of entertainment possibilities (radio, mp3, 3D Java) and good interface should be mentioned as the K750i's strengths. The model will certainly become a bestseller like Sony Ericsson's T610. Other manufacturers won't manage to integrate a functionally similar camera into a small device in a comparable time period. Nokia propagates using smartphone base for camera implementation, and that prevents them from creating a device of the Sony Ericsson K750i's level today. Nokia's copy of the device may be launched in the end of the year, but it will provide the same functionality for a higher price. In general there is no phone alternative to the Sony Ericsson K750i in a class of functional compact devices today. The model is of maximum saturated functionally; only smartphones may compete with it.

Reasoning form the different form-factors of these devices, we can't speak about a straight competitor. Every user can choose a phone to their liking and, above all, to their hand. But similar cameras will remain a rarity even in smartphones till the end of the year.


Possible shortcomings of commercial examples

There is no commercial software for the model at the moment. There are some mistakes in preliminary versions. We’d like to describe them in a separate paragraph, the majority are to be corrected by the start of the sales.

When assigning a photo to a contact in the phone book, you should remember the device doesn't transform the file into a smaller one. That was not relevant for low-resolution cameras but here a photo may take about 500-600 KB. And correspondingly, an empty window is shown at the call, since the photo has no time to upload completely and is shown jerkily. You also won't be able to scroll a list when editing the entry with a large photo, since showing and loading the picture is slow. The remedy is simple - use the lowest possible resolution when shooting portraits for the phone book or edit them on PC.

When working in camera mode (viewfinder shows the surroundings), the incoming call shows artifacts and lines appear. Screen orientation changes though the name and the number of a caller are displayed. The mistake will evidently be corrected by the beginning of the sales.
Shutter works incorrectly sometimes. Opening the shutter in the standby mode leads to switching from the screen saver mode but not to activating the camera. Only the second opening activates the camera.

In general, the software is stable and rouses no problems, even today with only a month and a half until the start of sales. The model is well balanced. It has no serious disadvantages in software that would be noticeable when using the device for long.

What next?
In the very beginning of the review we reminded of the pair models T68/T68i, T610/T630. A paired device for Sony Ericsson K750 was announced at the beginning and that is the W800. But it won't be the end of the development, and the model will be equipped the only absent function - UMTS. At last, a fully functional voice recognition system not depending on the accent might be implemented in the device. Labels will become unnecessary; menu items will be called and switched fast. The launch time is unclear and everything will depend on the current K750's sales. Considering their popularity, the renewal may be expected not earlier than in the autumn 2006. The presence of a 3 MP camera or even a bit better is mentioned in the preliminary specs. But the emphasis will be put on some other original but still not announced functions. Thus, the K750 successor will be interesting and, above all, compact.

Monsignor Colin Michener heard the sound again and closed the book. Somebody was there. He knew it.

Like before.

He stood from the reading desk and stared around at the array of baroque shelves. The ancient bookcases towered above him and more stood at attention down narrow halls that spanned in both directions. The cavernous room carried an aura, a mystique bred in part by its label. L' Archivio Segreto Vaticano. The Secret Archives of the Vatican.

He'd always thought that name strange since little contained within the volumes was secret. Most were merely the meticulous record of two millennia of Church organization, the accounts from a time when popes were kings, warriors, politicians, and lovers. All told there were twenty-five miles of shelves which offered much if a searcher knew where to look.

And Michener certainly did.

Re-focusing on the sound, his gaze drifted across the room, past frescos of Constantine, Pepin, and Frederick II, before settling on an iron grille at the far side. The space beyond the grille was dark and quiet. The Riserva was accessed only by direct papal authority, the key to the grille held by the Church's archivist. Michener had never entered that chamber, though he'd stood dutifully outside while his boss, Pope Clement XV, ventured inside. Even so, he was aware of some of the precious documents that windowless space contained. The last letter of Mary, Queen of Scots, before she was beheaded by Elizabeth I. The petitions of seventy-five English lords asking the pope to annul Henry VIII's first marriage. Galileo's signed confession. Napoleon's Treaty of Tolentino.

He studied the cresting and buttresses of the iron grille, a gilded frieze of foliage and animals hammered into the metal above. The gate itself had stood since the fourteenth century. Nothing in Vatican City was ordinary. Everything carried the distinctive mark of a renowned artist or a legendary craftsman, someone who'd labored for years trying to please both his God and his pope.

He strode across the room, his footfalls echoing through the tepid air, and stopped at the iron gate. A warm breeze swept past him from beyond the grille. The right side of the portal was dominated by a huge hasp. He tested the bolt. Locked and secure.

He turned back, wondering if one of the staff had entered the archives. The duty scriptor had departed when he'd arrived earlier and no one else would be allowed inside while he was there, since the papal secretary needed no babysitter. But there were a multitude of doors that led in and out, and he wondered if the noise he'd heard moments ago was that of ancient hinges being worked open, then gently closed. It was hard to tell. Sound within the great expanse was as confused as the writings.




He stepped to his right, toward one of the long corridors--the Hall of Parchments. Beyond was the Room of Inventories and Indexes. As he walked, overhead bulbs flashed on and off, casting a succession of light pools, and he felt as if he was underground, though he was two stories up.

He ventured only a little way, heard nothing, then turned around.

It was early in the day and mid-week. He'd chosen this time for his research deliberately--less chance of impeding others who'd gained access to the archives, and less chance of attracting the attention of Curial employees. He was on a mission for the Holy Father, his inquiries private, but he was not alone. The last time, a week ago, he'd sensed the same thing.

He re-entered the main hall and stepped back to the reading desk, his attention still on the room. The floor was a zodiacal diagram oriented to the sun, its rays able to penetrate thanks to carefully positioned slits high in the walls. He knew that centuries ago the Gregorian calendar had been calculated at this precise spot. Yet no sunlight leaked in today. Outside was cold and wet, a mid-autumn rainstorm pelting Rome.

The volumes that had held his attention for the past two hours were neatly arranged on the lectern. Many had been composed within the past two decades. Four were much older. Two of the oldest were written in Italian, one was in Spanish, the other in Portuguese. He could read all of them with ease--another reason Clement XV coveted his employment.

The Spanish and Italian accounts were of little value, both re-hashes of the Portuguese work: A Comprehensive and Detailed Study of the Reported Apparitions of the Holy Virgin Mary at Fatima --- May 13, 1917 to October 13, 1917.

Pope Benedict XV had ordered the investigation in 1922 as part of the Church's investigation into what supposedly had occurred in a remote Portuguese valley. The entire manuscript was handwritten, the ink faded to a warm yellow so the words appeared as if they were scripted in gold. The Bishop of Leira had performed a thorough inquiry, spending eight years in all, and the information later became critical in the 1930 acknowledgment by the Vatican that the Virgin's six earthly appearances at Fatima were worthy of assent. Three appendices, now attached to the original, were generated in the 1950s, 60s, and 90s.

Michener had studied them all with the thoroughness of the lawyer he'd been trained by the Church to be. Seven years at the University of Munich had earned him his degrees, yet he'd never practiced law conventionally. His was a world of ecclesiastical pronouncements and canonical decrees. Precedent spanned two millennia and relied more on an understanding of the times than on any notion of stare decisis. His arduous legal training had become invaluable to his Church service, as the logic of the law had many times become an ally in the confusing mire of divine politics. More importantly, it had just helped him find in this labyrinth of forgotten information what Clement XV wanted.

The sound came again.

A soft squeak, like two limbs rubbing together in a breeze, or a mouse announcing its presence.

He rushed toward the source and glanced both ways.

Nothing.

Fifty feet off to the left, a door led out of the archive. He approached the portal and tested the lock. It yielded. He strained to open the heavy slab of carved oak and the iron hinges squealed ever so slightly.

A sound he recognized.

The hallway beyond was empty, but a gleam on the marble floor caught his attention.He knelt.The transparent clumps of moisture came with regularity, the droplets leading off into the corridor, then back through the doorway into the archive. Suspended within some were remnants of mud, leaves, and grass.

He followed the trail with his gaze which stopped at the end of a row of shelves. Rain continued to pound the roof.

He knew the puddles for what they were.

7:45 a.m.

The media circus started early, as Michener knew it would. He stood before the window and watched as television vans and trailers eased into St. Peter's Square and claimed their assigned positions. The Vatican press office had reported to him yesterday that seventy-one press applications had been approved for the tribunal from North American, English, and French journalists, though there were also a dozen Italians and three Germans in the group. Most were print media, but several news outlets had asked for and were granted on-site broadcast permission. The BBC had even lobbied for camera access inside the tribunal itself, part of a documentary it was preparing, but that request was denied. The whole thing should be quite a show --- but that was the price to be paid for going after a celebrity.

The Apostolic Penitentiary was the senior of three Vatican tribunals and dealt exclusively with excommunications. Canon law proclaimed five reasons a person could be excommunicated: Breaking the confidentiality of the confessional. Physically attacking the pope. Consecrating a bishop without Holy See approval. Desecrating the Eucharist. And the one at issue today --- a priest absolving his accomplice in a sexual sin.

Father Thomas Kealy of St. Peter and Paul Church in Richmond, Virginia had done the unthinkable. Three years ago he'd engaged in an open relationship with a woman, then in front of his congregation he'd absolved them both of sin. The stunt, and Kealy's scathing comments on the Church's unbending position regarding celibacy, had garnered a great deal of attention. Individual priests and theologians had long challenged Rome on celibacy, and the usual response was to wait the advocate out, since most either quit or fell into line. Father Kealy, though, took his challenge to new levels by publishing three books, one an international best seller, that directly contradicted established Catholic doctrine. Michener well knew the institutional fear that surrounded him. It was one thing when a priest challenged Rome, quite another when people started listening.

And people listened to Thomas Kealy.

He was handsome and smart and possessed the enviable gift of being able to succinctly convey his thoughts. He'd appeared across the globe and had attracted a strong following. Every movement needed a leader, and church reform advocates had apparently found theirs in this bold priest. His website, which Michener knew theApostolic Penitentiary monitored on a daily basis, scored more than twenty thousand hits a day. A year ago Kealy had founded a global movement, Catholics Rallying for Equality Against Theological Eccentricities --- CREATE --- which now boasted over a million members, most from North America and Europe.

Kealy's bold leadership had even spawned courage among American bishops, and last year a sizable bloc came close to openly endorsing his ideas and questioning Rome's continued reliance on archaic medieval philosophy. As Kealy had many times pronounced, the American church was in crisis thanks to old ideas, disgraced priests, and arrogant leaders. His argument that the Vatican loves American money, but not American influence resonated. He offered the kind of populist common sense that Michener knew Western minds craved. He had become a celebrity. Now the challenger had come to meet the champion, and their joust would be recorded by the world press.

But first, Michener had a joust of his own.

He turned from the window and stared at Clement XV, flushing from his mind the thought that his old friend might soon die.

"How are you today, Holy Father?" he asked in German. When alone, they always used Clement's native language. Almost none of the palace staff spoke German.

The pope reached for a china cup and savored a sip of espresso. "It is amazing how being surrounded by such majesty can be so unsatisfying.

"The cynicism was nothing new, but of late its tone had intensified.

Clement tabled the cup. "Did you find the information in the archive?"

Michener stepped from the window and nodded.

"Was the original Fatima report helpful?""Not a bit. I discovered other documents that yielded more." He wondered again why any of this was important, but said nothing.

The pope seemed to sense what he was thinking. "You never ask, do you?"

"You'd tell, if you wanted me to know."

A lot had changed about this man over the past three years --- the pope growing more distant, pale, and fragile by the day. While Clement had always been a short, thin man, it seemed of late that his body was retreating within itself. His scalp, once covered by a thatch of brown hair, was now dusted with short gray fuzz. The bright face that had adorned newspapers and magazines, smiling from the balcony of St. Peter's as his election was announced, loomed gaunt to the point of caricature, his flush cheeks gone, the once hardly noticeable port wine stain now a prominent splotch that the Vatican press office routinely airbrushed from photos. The pressures of occupying the chair of St. Peter had taken a toll, severely aging a man who, not so long ago, scaled the Bavarian Alps with regularity.

Michener motioned to the tray of coffee. He remembered when wurst, yogurt, and black bread constituted breakfast. "Why don't you eat? The steward told me you didn't have any dinner last night."

"Such a worrier."

"Why are you not hungry?"

"Persistent, too."

"Evading my questions does nothing to calm my fears."

"And what are your fears, Colin?"

He wanted to mention the lines bracketing Clement's brow, the alarming pallor of his skin, the veins that marked the old man's hands and wrists. But he simply said, "Only your health, Holy Father." Clement smiled. "You are good at avoiding my taunts."

"Arguing with the Holy Father is a fruitless endeavor."

"Ah, that infallibility stuff. I forgot. I'm always right."

He decided to take that challenge. "Not always."

Clement chuckled. "Do you have the name found in the archives?"

He reached into his cassock and removed what he'd written just before he'd heard the sound. He handed it to Clement and said, "Somebody was there again."

"Which should not surprise you. Nothing is private here." The pope read, then repeated what was written. "Father Andrej Tibor."

He knew what was expected of him. "He's a retired priest living in Romania. I checked our records. His retirement check is still sent to an address there."

"I want you to go see him."

"Are you going to tell me why?"

"Not yet."

For the past three months Clement had been deeply bothered. The old man had tried to conceal it, but after twenty-four years of friendship little escaped Michener's notice. He remembered precisely when the apprehension started. Just after a visit to the archives --- to the Riserva --- and the ancient safe waiting behind the locked iron grille. "Do I get to know when you will tell me why?"

The pope rose from his chair. "After prayers."

They left the study and walked in silence across the fourth floor, stopping at an open doorway. The chapel beyond was sheathed in white marble, the windows a dazzling glass mosaic fashioned to represent the Stations of the Cross. Clement came every morning for a few minutes of meditation. No one was allowed to interrupt him. Everything could wait until he finished talking with God.

Michener had served Clement since the early days when the wiry German was first an archbishop, then a cardinal, then Vatican secretary of state. He'd risen with his mentor --- from seminarian, to priest, to monsignor --- the climb culminating thirty-four months back when the Sacred College of Cardinals elected Jakob Cardinal Volkner the 267th successor to St. Peter. Volkner immediately chose Michener as his personal secretary.

Michener knew Clement for who he was --- a man educated in a postwar German society that had swirled in turmoil --- learning his diplomatic craft in such volatile postings as Dublin, Cairo, Cape Town, and Warsaw. Jakob Volkner was a man of immense patience and fanatical attention. Never once in their years together had Michener ever doubted his mentor's faith or character, and he'd long ago resolved that if he could simply be half the man Volkner had been, he would consider his life a success.

Clement finished his prayers, crossed himself, then kissed the pectoral cross that graced the front of his white simar. His quiet time had been short today. The pope eased himself up from the prie-dieu, but lingered at the altar. Michener stood quiet in the corner until the pontiff stepped over to him.

"I intend to explain myself in a letter to Father Tibor. It will be papal authority for him to provide you with certain information."

Still not an explanation as to why the Romanian trip was necessary. "When would you like me to go?"

"Tomorrow. The next day at the latest."

"I'm not sure that's a good idea. Can't one of the legates handle the task?"

"I assure you, Colin. I won't die while you are gone. I may look bad, but I feel fine."

Which had been confirmed by Clement's doctors not less than a week ago. After a battery of tests, the pope had been proclaimed free of any debilitating disease. But privately the papal physician had cautioned that stress was Clement's deadliest enemy, and his rapid decline over the past few months seemed evidence that something was tearing at his soul.

"I never said you looked bad, Holiness."

"You didn't have to." The old man pointed to his eyes. "It's in there. I've learned to read them."

Michener held up the slip of paper. "Why do you need to make contact with this priest?"

"I should have done it after I first went into the Riserva. But I resisted." Clement paused. "I can't resist any longer. I have no choice."

"Why is the supreme pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church without choices?"

The pope stepped away and faced a crucifix on the wall. Two stout candles burned bright on either side of the marble altar.

"Are you going to the tribunal this morning?" Clement asked, his back to him.

"That's not an answer to my question.""The supreme pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church can pick and choose what he wants to answer."

"I believe you instructed me to attend the tribunal. So, yes, I'll be there. Along with a roomful of reporters."

"Will she be there?"

He knew exactly who the old man was referring to. "I'm told she applied for press credentials to cover the event."

"Do you know her interest in the tribunal?"

He shook his head. "As I told you before, I only learned of her presence by accident."Clement turned to face him. "But what a fortunate accident."

He wondered why the pope was interested.

"It's all right to care, Colin. She's a part of your past. A part you should not forget."

Clement only knew the whole story because Michener had needed a confessor, and the archbishop of Cologne had then been his closest companion. It was the only breach of his clerical vows during his quarter century as a priest. He'd thought about quitting, but Clement talked him out of it, explaining that only through weakness could a soul gain strength. Nothing would be gained from walking away. Now, after more than a dozen years, he knew Jakob Volkner had been right. He was the papal secretary. For nearly three years he'd helped Clement XV govern a derisive combination of Catholic personality and culture. The fact that his entire participation was based on a violation of his oath to his God and his Church never seemed to bother him. And that realization had, of late, become quite troubling.

"I haven't forgotten any of it," he whispered.

The pope stepped close to him and laid a hand on his shoulder.

"Do not lament for that which was lost. It is unhealthy and counterproductive."

"Lying doesn't come easy to me."

"Your God has forgiven you. That is all you need."

"How can you be sure?"

"I am. And if you can't believe the infallible head of the Catholic Church, who can you believe?" A smile accompanied the facetious comment, one that told Michener not to take things quite so seriously.

He smiled, too. "You're impossible."

Clement removed his hand. "True, but I'm lovable."

"I'll try and remember that."

"You do that. I'll have my letter for Father Tibor ready shortly. It will call for a written response, but if he desires to speak, listen to him, ask what you will, and tell me everything. Understand?"He wondered how he would know what to ask since he had no idea why he was even going, but he simply said, "I understand, Holiness. As always."Clement grinned. "That's right, Colin. As always.
